PDM Dinner Meeting - Tuesday, March 16th, 2010A Model for Change: Competency-Based LeadershipWith Mr. Joe Schriever, CIRM, CSCPThe old saying goes "If you don't like Texas weather, wait a few minutes." Although not usually that quick and gladly not that often, change within any company can happen, be it a re-organization, business closure, new ownership, or even just a business system implementation among any number of others. And if you have worked for any length of time, chances are you have been affected in one way or another more times than not. Add to that the current business environment and change management leadership becomes a requirement in any business or career field. Successful change management requires a set of leadership and management skills that can be defined and taught. The question is . which skills? Using a Leadership and Management Competency Model as his foundation, our presenter, Mr. Joe Schriever, will discuss the abilities that a change leader needs most. This special set of aptitudes is critical to a process that will be used to frame change management. Throughout a career of leading turnarounds and change, Joe has developed a process with a focus on the people who will ultimately determine the success or failure of the change. Leading and managing the people, gaining their trust, and engaging them in "working the plan" is critical. Without the commitment of the people, even the best change or turnaround plan will not succeed. The Leadership and Management Competency Model was developed by a New York State work group, and lists 39 competencies. Joe has distilled them into the following aspects: strategic, thinking, leadership, performance, communications, conflict, and personal. He will demonstrate the use of specific competencies from these aspects to lead and manage change. Joe Schriever has led turnaround and change initiatives in military, telecommunications and electric utilities, and state government. In a career that spanned over 35 years, he has accumulated a body of experience with successes, failures, and near-misses; he has seen good leadership, marginal leadership, and no leadership. From all of this he has gleaned a simple change process and the competencies that will be shared in this presentation. A firm believer in life-time learning, Joe has earned degrees from Texas A&M University and Angelo State University and maintains six professional certifications.
